Registration for our May 2015 screendance (dance filmmaking) and art workshops is now open!/Les inscriptions pour nos stages de vidéo-danse et de land art en mai 2015 sont ouvertes !

 Screendance Making: An introductory screendance workshop open to professionals and university-level students of all media (dance, visual art, film, etc.) interested in creating movement-based video projects. The workshop will explore the vast creative possibilities of screendance through a variety of group and individual activities that will enhance each participant’s creative, theoretical, and practical knowledge. The workshop will include camera work, creating movement for the screen, editing demonstrations, professional development strategies (screening and financing screendance projects), as well as screenings and lectures that take place throughout the festival week. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to collaborate with a group of visiting visual artists during a laboratory day to create a short film that will be screened during the festival. Workshop fee is 150 euros and takes place 18-23 May 2015.  Workshop language: English

Raw Earth Art, a hands-on workshop for creative improvisation in sculpture, using materials found in nature to create installations variously known as land art or site specific works within the parks and public green spaces of Le Creusot, France. In collaboration with artists from the disciplines of screendance and performance art, the creation of sculptural works in the landscape will lead to short film screened during the final day of the festival.

The workshop is open to professional visual and performing artists from all media, as well as university art students, who wish to engage with natural spaces as a source of both creative materials and the site of art making itself. The workshop is led by Diana Heyne (New York Botanical Garden, American National Botanical Garden, etc.).

Space is limited and open on a first come/first serve basis. Workshop fee is 150 euros and takes place 19-23 May 2015. Workshop language: English

We are pleased to accept presentation proposals for our third annual screendance conference to be held in May 2015 that explore the theme, “The Politics of Space”.

We welcome abstracts for 20-minute moderated panel presentations that address any aspect of this theme, which can be interpreted broadly in order to foster dialogues concerning how the intersection of diverse movement and image forms investigate, create, and interpret space. Areas of interest within this topic, include but are not limited to:

screendance & ecology

virtual reality/computer simulated environments

the body as site (of enquiry, protest, etc.)

urban planning/historical versus contemporary use of space

The 2015 conference dates are: May 22-24, to be held at the Médiathèque of Le Creusot (one hour by TGV train from Paris).

All conference papers will be considered for publication online and in print following the conference.

SPECIAL NOTE: In recent years, we have received a number of proposals that address screendance in a very general sense, which we were unable to include. The conference audience is largely a specialized public, composed of artists and scholars already working within the field of screendance. We seek proposals that take this into consideration by addressing original topics supported by strong methodologies and references, rather than general concepts regarding screendance.

The working language of the conference is English.

Be sure that your proposal provides a solid description of what you plan to present, how you will support your argument, and your major references/methodologies, etc.

In May 2015 the Festival International de Vidéo Danse de Bourgogne will dedicate its 7^th edition to the theme “The Politics of Space” through curated screenings, workshops, and conference events. Workshop announcements and conference submissions will be announced shortly; this call is for a screening program that will address the festival’s theme, which can be interpreted broadly in order to foster dialogues concerning how the intersection of diverse movement and image forms investigate, create, and interpret space. Beyond films that are simply set in diverse locations, the festival is seeking works of screendance that actively question and engage the relationships of space within and as moving images.

Additionally, the festival is particularly interested in works that use space to explore ideas of:

screendance & ecology

virtual reality/computer simulated environments

the body as site (of enquiry, protest, etc.)

urban planning/historical versus contemporary use of space

HOW TO SUBMIT

International submissions of any year or length will be considered. Due to limited screening time, short films will be favored.

The festival only accepts electronic (online) submissions. Please be sure to send the following information in the body of your e-mail:

Your name/title of film/duration of film/country of production/year of production/director, choreographer, editor, musician, and other main artistic credits/a paragraph detailing the film’s relationship to the festival theme/link to view film on Vimeo or YouTube (if your video is private, please don’t forget to send us the password).

If any of the above submission information is missing, unfortunately we will not be able to consider your submission(s). Au mois de mai 2015, le Festival International de Vidéo Danse de Bourgogne consacrera sa 7ème édition au thème de “La Politique de l’espace” au travers de projections programmées, de stages et de conférences. L’annonce des stages et les candidatures pour les conférences seront bientôt annoncées ; cet appel concerne le programme de projections en relation avec le thème du festival, qui peut être interprété de manière large de façon à générer des dialogues sur la façon dont l’intersection de divers mouvements et de formes d’images examinent, créent et interprètent l’espace. Au-delà de films qui sont simplement situés au sein de divers lieux, le festival recherche des oeuvres de vidéo-danse qui interrogent de manière active les relations de l’espace au sein et en tant qu’images en mouvement.

Additionellement, le festival est particulièrement intéressé par les oeuvres qui emploient l’espace pour explorer des idées de :

vidéo-danse & écologie

réalité virtuelle / environnements simulés par ordinateur

le corps en tant que site (de questionnement, de protestation, etc.)

” Le Duo en Danse ” –  une projection thématique en présence des réalisatrices : Marie-Elise Beyne (Paris), Micheline Lelièvre (Paris), Katy Pendlebury (Royaume-Uni), ainsi que des danseurs Jean Guizerix et Wilfride Piollet (anciens danseurs étoiles de l’Opéra de Paris)/ “Le Duo en Danse” (“Parterning in dance”) – a thematic screening with visiting artists : Marie-Elise Beyne (Paris), Micheline Le Lelièvre (Paris), Katy Pendlebury (UK), and dancers Jean Guizerix & Wilfride Piollet (former “danseurs étoiles”, Paris Opera Ballet) :

Français : La danse est une forme d’art partagée. Nous dansons la plupart du temps avec quelqu’un ou pour quelqu’un, avec quelque chose, en couple ou en groupe. Le célèbre pas de deux de la danse classique est emblématique du duo traditionel, mais diverses autres formes de partenariats existent, comme celui de la danse entre un objet et un interpète (de la cane de Charlie Chaplin à l’huile d’olive chez Jan Fabre), la danse avec le paysage dans une pièce in-situ, etc. Quant à la vidéo danse, elle consiste par nature en un duo intime entre la caméra et la danse. Cette projection thématique propose d’examiner le rôle du “duo” en vidéo danse aujourd’hui en visionnant une sélection de court-métrages français et internationaux, suivis par un nouveau court documentaire Chemins croisés de danse. Ce film pose non seulement un regard sur deux anciens danseurs étoiles de l’Opéra de Paris, Jean Guizerix et Wilfride Piollet –dont le couple réprésente une collaboration à la scène comme à la vie –mais également sur le partenariat dynamique qui s’est formé entre la danse classique et la danse contemporaine au cours de leur période de travail à l’Opera. Le couple parle de ses expériences avec des chorégraphes tels que Merce Cunningham et Maurice Béjart, ainsi qu’avec le poète René Char – ce qui nous permet de mieux comprendre le “duo” essentiel qui se construit entre les artistes créateurs et les interprètes. 

English: Dance is a shared art form. Most often we dance with someone, for someone, or with something as part of a couple or a group. The celebrated pas de deux of classical ballet is emblematic of the traditional duo, but diverse other forms of partnership exist, including those between an object and a dancer (from Charlie’s Chaplin’s cane to Jan Fabre’s dance with olive oil), and the landscape in a work of site-specific performance, among others. As for screendance, it is by nature an intimate partnership between image making and dance. This thematic screening proposes to examine the role of the “duo” in contemporary screendance as seen in a selection of French and international short films, followed by a new documentary Chemins croisés de danse. This film illustrates not only the career of two former danseurs étoiles of the Paris Opera Ballet, Jean Guizerix et Wilfride Piollet– for whom their couple represents both a collaboration on stage and in domestic life– but also the dynamic partnership formed between classical ballet and contemporary dance during their time at the Paris Opera Ballet. Throughout the film, the dancers comment on their experiences with choreographers such as Merce Cunningham, Maurice Béjart, and the poet René Char, allowing viewers to better understand the essential “duo” constructed between artists and performers.
